The Greatest Gift of Leadership: Empowering Others to Make Confident Decisions

As a leader, few moments are as pivotal as when one of your best team members approaches you with a big decision. For me, this moment came when a top performer on my team said, “I came across another job opportunity. What do you think?”

This scenario isn’t new to me—it’s happened several times throughout my career. But the most recent instance brought back all the familiar emotions. As he described the opportunity, I could hear the excitement in his voice, but also a hint of uncertainty. Then he asked again, “What do you think?”

Thoughts immediately swirled in my mind. I could have shared my perspective, weighed the pros and cons for him, or even told him what I thought he should do. But instead, I made a deliberate decision to approach the conversation differently.

The Scenario: Guiding Without Directing

Rather than offering my opinion, I asked him a different question:

“Where do you want to be in three years? Regardless of whether you stay with this company or not, what’s your vision for your career?”

The question gave him pause. I could see him sinking into his thoughts, reflecting deeply before he began articulating his aspirations.

Then I followed up:

“What critical experience and skills do you think you need to get there? What gaps do you think you currently have?”

As the conversation unfolded, the focus shifted away from the job on the table and toward his long-term aspirations. By the end of our discussion, he had an illuminating moment:

“Actually, now that I think about it, this job fills the gap I need to grow. It will give me the skills and experience to get where I want to be. I’m going to take it!”

At that moment, I smiled and said, “Good for you. I fully support your decision.”

The Lesson: Empowering Others to Decide

Instead of telling him what I thought was best, I equipped him with the ability, thought process, and methodology to make the decision himself. The result? He left the conversation confident, accountable, and excited about his choice.

As a leader, parent, or coach, the greatest gift you can give someone isn’t the “right” answer—it’s the ability to make their own decisions. Solutions handed out only solve problems for the moment. But equipping someone with the framework to make decisions empowers them for a lifetime.

Why Decision-Making Is Essential

Decision-making is one of the most critical skills we can develop, both in life and in business. Why? Because every aspect of our growth—whether personal, professional, or relational—is shaped by the decisions we make.

Decisions determine how we spend our time, where we invest our energy, and the opportunities we pursue or let pass by.

In business, effective decision-making drives projects forward, aligns teams, and delivers outcomes. In life, it shapes our experiences, relationships, and personal fulfillment. Yet despite its importance, decision-making remains one of the hardest skills to master—especially for introverts.

Why Is Decision-Making So Hard?

For many introverts, decision-making feels particularly daunting because of our natural tendency to reflect deeply. We think through every angle, analyze potential outcomes, and weigh the pros and cons. While this thoughtfulness can be a strength, it often leads to overthinking.

Here’s the funny thing about every decision: it’s like a sliding door. Each decision comes with at least two options, and when you choose one, you inherently close the door on the other. That’s what makes it so hard.

We lie awake at night asking ourselves:

  • What if I make the wrong choice?
  • What if I miss out on a better opportunity?
  • What if this decision has consequences I can’t foresee?

This fear of making the wrong decision often leads to hesitation, overthinking, and even avoidance. And in those moments of vulnerability, it’s natural to seek clarity or guidance from others.

But here’s the thing: when you’re at your most uncertain, the opinions of others can easily steer your thoughts. If someone offers their perspective, you might find yourself leaning heavily on their judgment—because you’re already in a vulnerable state.

The Most Important Lesson About Decision-Making

Over the years, through personal growth, leadership, and even parenting, I’ve learned a vital truth: you must own your decisions.

Seeking input is valuable, but the final decision must come from within. Why? Because no one else lives with the consequences of your choices but you.

When you make a decision yourself, you build confidence and resilience. Even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for, you learn, grow, and trust yourself more deeply.

Key takeaway: Owning your decisions builds confidence and resilience, empowering you to learn and grow from every outcome.

Final Thoughts

Decision-making is more than just a skill—it’s the cornerstone of personal and professional growth. Whether it’s a career move, a business strategy, or a personal challenge, the ability to navigate choices with clarity and confidence is invaluable.

As we step into another year, let’s commit to strengthening our decision-making muscles—not just for ourselves, but for those we lead and inspire.
