The Power of Taking Action: Lessons from a 7-Year-Old’s Tennis Match
A seven-year-old girl overcame fear and hesitation by starting a girls’ tennis team and competing despite doubts, showing that confidence and growth come from taking action, not waiting for the perfect moment or guaranteed success.

I want to share a story about action, confidence, and overcoming fear—one that starts with my seven-year-old daughter and her quiet determination.
Driven By A Simple Purpose
For months, she had been sneaking into her big brother’s room, carefully admiring his hard-fought soccer medals and trophies. One day, she looked up at me and asked,
“How do I get medals?”
It was a simple question, but behind it was a desire not just to have something shiny, but to accomplish something meaningful.
Together, we spoke to her tennis coach, asking if there was a competitive team she could join—one where she could compete, win, and earn medals of her own. What we learned was disheartening. Every year, the club tried to form a girls’ tennis team, but they never had enough sign-ups. There were always enough boys, but never enough girls to make it happen.
Hearing this, my daughter saw a chance to change things. When the registration opened, she ran to her friends, excitedly sharing the news. Sitting courtside, I overheard the animated conversation of these seven-year-olds:
“We’re going to get medals!”
They cheered as if they had already won. With the help of a few parents, the first-ever U10 girls’ tennis team was formed.
When Action Leads to Fear
Then, two weeks before her first match, something changed. The nerves kicked in. That confidence she once had—the belief that she was the best in her class—faded.
“What if I lose?” she asked.
She was no longer just playing for fun. She was stepping onto a bigger stage, facing tougher competition. The reality of the challenge ahead was setting in. And waiting in front of her was a match that would test her resilience.
Facing the Challenge
The match day arrived. She was paired against an opponent two years older and much more experienced.
It was a tough battle, point by point, game by game. The score was tied at 7-7.
Then came the tiebreaker.
It stretched into multiple deuces, a grueling 90-minute match.
For a seven-year-old playing her first competitive game, this was a test of endurance—both physical and mental.
She lost 7-9.
By the time the match ended, the courts were empty. The other players had finished and gone home. But as she walked off the court, she wasn’t in tears. She wasn’t defeated. Instead, she was smiling.
“I did well.”
The Power of Taking Action
This moment wasn’t about winning or losing—it was about showing up, stepping into the unknown, and giving her all. What started as a simple desire for a medal became something far greater:
- She created an opportunity—not just for herself, but for seven other girls.
- She faced her fears, dealt with setbacks, and kept fighting until the last point.
- She learned how to handle pressure, self-doubt, and uncertainty.
As introverts, we often hesitate to take action. We overthink, weigh every possible outcome, and drain our energy before we even begin. But confidence isn’t built by thinking—it’s built by doing.
How to Take Action When Fear Holds You Back
If you struggle with hesitation, here are a few things that can help:
- Start before you feel ready. Confidence comes from action, not the other way around. Waiting until you feel ready often means waiting forever.
- Break it down into small steps. Big goals can be overwhelming. Instead of focusing on the entire journey, focus on the next step.
- Expect discomfort. Fear and doubt are part of growth. If you feel resistance, it likely means you’re stepping into something meaningful.
- Remember your “why.” My daughter simply wanted a medal, but the real reward was what she gained through the process. Reconnect with the reason behind your action.
- Focus on effort, not outcome. You can’t always control the result, but you can control the work you put in. And that’s what builds resilience.
Final Thoughts
This story reminds me that:
Action creates opportunity. Action builds confidence. And action leads to growth.
If you find yourself stuck in hesitation, waiting for the perfect moment—take action. Even if you don’t win, even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for, the process itself will shape you.
What’s one thing you’ve been overthinking? What’s stopping you from taking action? Drop a comment—I’d love to hear your thoughts.
